NRA Certified Instructor

A major objective of the National Rifle Association has been to provide education and training in the safe and proper use of firearms. Knowing how to shoot is an important requirement for NRA instructors, but you will also need to know how to teach others to shoot. NRA Instructor Training Courses help you develop the additional knowledge, skills and techniques needed to organize and teach courses in the NRA Basic Firearm Training Program.

Instructor training courses are conducted by NRA Training Counselors. Training Counselors are active and experienced instructors who have been appointed by NRA to train experienced shooters to teach others to shoot. NRA Instructor Training courses are posted at http://www.nrainstructors.org/searchcourse.aspx, or you may request a list of Training Counselors in your geographic area by contacting the NRA Training Department at 703-267-1430.

To qualify as an NRA Instructor:

• Candidates must possess and demonstrate a solid background in firearm safety and shooting skills acquired through previous firearm training and/or previous shooting experience. Instructor candidates must be intimately familiar with each action type in the discipline they wish to be certified.
• Candidates will be required to demonstrate solid and safe firearms handling skills required to be successful during an instructor training course by completing precourse questionnaires and assessment exercises administered by the NRA Appointed Training Counselor.
• Candidates must satisfactorily complete an NRA Instructor Training Course in the discipline they wish to teach (e.g., NRA Basic Pistol Course), and receive the endorsement of the NRA Training Counselor conducting that training.

NRA Instructor courses are discipline specific. The first 6 hours of an NRA instructor course is NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT), utilizing the NRA Trainer’s Guide. During this portion, candidates will learn NRA policies and procedures, basic public speaking skills, training methodology, use of a training team and training aids, organizing a course, building a budget, and finally preparing to teach. The BIT is followed by discipline specific training and will be 5 to 16 additional hours, depending on the discipline. During this portion, candidates will be provided the appropriate lesson plans and basic course student packets. Role playing is a major part of an instructor course. Candidates take turns working in teams, actually conducting portions of the course to other candidates who play the role as basic students.

Training Counselors will evaluate candidates’ performance based on their ability to handle the firearms with confidence, use of appropriate training aids, following the lesson plans and meeting all learning objectives, while utilizing the teaching philosophies learned during the BIT. Candidates can also expect to learn the NRA discipline specific instructional methods and evaluating and improving the performance of beginning shooters. Candidates will be provided with the NRA Trainer’s Guide, appropriate Lesson Plans and Outlines, Basic Course Student handbooks, certificates, basic student examinations, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program booklet, Basic Firearm Training Programs Brochure, Gun Safety Rules brochure, NRA Trainer’s Examination and NRA discipline specific instructor examination (minimum passing grade is 90%).

Certified Basic Archery Instructor

In as little as 8 hours, you'll learn how to accurately shoot a bow, teach beginner archers, manage a basic archery program, repair equipment and change lives through archery. "Basic Instructor" is a joint certification of USA Archery and National Field Archery Association. NADA facilitates the training of over 6,000 new Basic instructors each year on behalf of the organizations. It's geared towards camps, schools, recreation and youth agencies and anywhere there's a short-term archery program.

Range Safety Officer

The NRA Range Safety Officer program was developed in response to the demand for a nationally-recognized range safety officer certification. NRA Range Safety Officers are people who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to organizing, conducting, and supervising safe shooting activities and range operations.

NRA Range Safety Officers must be 21 years of age or older. The Range Safety Officer course consists of: Range Safety Officer’s roles and responsibilities, range standard operating procedures, range inspection and range rules, firearm stoppages and malfunctions, and Range Safety Briefings which include emergency procedures. Candidates must also receive 90 percent or better on the written exam.

How does one become a certified NRA Range Safety Officer?

1. Individuals who currently possess a valid NRA Firearms Instructor certification or NRA Coach appointment in one of the NRA’s firearms training programs have the option of taking the Range Safety Officer course by home validation.
2. Those individuals who do not hold a trainer rating must attend a Range Safety Officer course. Range Safety Officer courses are conducted by Chief Range Safety Officers. ("Chief Range Safety Officers" are those individuals certified to train NRA Range Safety Officers.) The Range Safety Officer course is a ninehour course that consists of classroom time and practical exercises conducted on a range. Range Safety Officer candidates will receive the Range Safety Officer Student Packet.

The National 4-H Shooting Sports Program

The focus of all 4-H programs is the development of youth as individuals and as responsible and productive citizens. The National 4-H Shooting Sports Program stands out as an example. Youth learn marksmanship, the safe and responsible use of firearms,the principles of hunting and archery, and much more. The activities of the program and the support of caring adult leaders provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, self-worth, and conservation ethics.

Local 4-H Shooting Sports clubs are open to all youth ages 8 to 18. Each year, 4-H teaches a shooting sport to more than 300,000 boys and girls. The program provides a supportive environment in which young people can experience hands-on, fun learning experiences.

Volunteers are needed to coordinate county programs and to work at the local level. Individuals who are interested in shooting sports and are willing to learn about them can become involved in an existing program or club. If none exists, they can work with 4-H youth staff to help establish a program.

Specific objectives for the program are to:

• teach decision making, teamwork, self-discipline, self-confidence, and problem solving;
• promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior;
• encourage an appreciation and understanding of natural resources;
• develop leadership abilities;
• build character and willingness to assume citizenship responsibility;
• furnish enjoyable, positive relationships with peers and adult instructors;
• strengthen families through participation in lifelong recreational activities;
• build awareness of related career opportunities.

The Shooting Sports curriculum uses the resources of the land-grant university and the time, talent, and dedication of Cooperative Extension agents and certified 4-H leaders, instructors, and trainers who instruct 4-H members in firearms safety and marksmanship. The shooting disciplines include archery, muzzle loading, pistol, rifle, shotgun and hunting. Each discipline is taught by a National or State Certified Instructor.

All instructors are trained by state instructors certified to teach courses. Adult volunteers receive training in shooting sports at state and regional workshops to become qualified instructors. 4-H teen leaders may wish to assist with instruction. Shooting sports leaders act as role models and must impart the 4-H philosophy and youth development objectives to 4-H members.

4-H members have opportunities to test their shooting, hunting, and sportsmanship skills in county, regional, state, and national competitions.

The Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scouts of America adheres to its longstanding policy of teaching its youth and adult members the safe, responsible, intelligent handling, care, and use of firearms, airguns, and BB guns in planned, carefully managed, and supervised programs. For many young people, the BSA provides ready access to safe, instructional shooting sports programs. Learning proper skills and safety techniques at an early age often results in a lifetime interest in shooting sports and the outdoors.

Although the total number of merit badges awarded by the Boy Scouts of America has decreased over the past decade, the number of merit badges awarded for Archery, Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting have all increased. Of the 121 different types of merit badges awarded, Rifle Shooting ranked 14th in 2008 while Shotgun Shooting ranked 27th in terms of participation.

Scouting serves young men and women in every part of the country through more than 300 local council service centers. Each council helps chartered organizations in its geographic area to effectively use the Scouting program and to expand the use of the program to other community groups. Civilian Marksmanship Program

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is a national organization dedicated to training and educating U. S. citizens in responsible uses of firearms and airguns through gun safety training, marksmanship training and competitions. The CMP is a federally chartered 501 (c) (3) corporation that places its highest priority on serving youth through gun safety and marksmanship activities that encourage personal growth and build life skills.

The mission of the Civilian Marksmanship Program is to promote firearms safety and marksmanship training for U.S. citizens with an emphasis on youth. The vision of the Civilian Marksmanship Program is that every youth in America has the opportunity to participate in firearms safety and marksmanship programs.

The CMP is a national leader in providing instructional materials, training leaders and organizing competition events that enable youth to participate in safe marksmanship activities. CMP youth marksmanship programs include:

• JROTC Marksmanship: The CMP cooperates with the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force JROTC Commands to provide the marksmanship training and competition programs that are used by 2,500 JROTC units throughout the nation.
• National Three-Position Air Rifle Council: The CMP partners with The American Legion, BSA-Venturing, National 4-H Shooting Sports, the U. S. Army Marksmanship Unit, USA Shooting (national governing body for Olympic shooting) and the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force JROTC Commands to govern almost all sanctioned youth air rifle competitions in the U. S.
• Local Youth Marksmanship Programs: 85 percent of the CMP’s 5,200 affiliated gun clubs and local youth organizations offer gun safety and youth marksmanship instruction that utilize CMP training materials and supplies to youth in their communities.
• Junior Rifle Camps: The CMP provides a summer-long series of youth shooting sports camps to give advanced training to 500 youth and their adult leaders.
• Camp Riflery: The CMP is a national leader in providing instructional material specifically designed for youth BB gun, air rifle and smallbore rifle marksmanship in summer camp settings.

Scholastic Clay Target Program

The SCTP is YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM providing young people with a positive experience in sports. The SCTP is designed to instill in young people a set of personal values or character traits for fair play, compassionate understanding, individual responsibility, sportsmanship, self-discipline and personal commitment – qualities that will serve them well throughout their lives and will be instrumental in helping each SCTP Athlete to reach his/her full potential.

Competition is clearly a part of the SCTP, an indispensable part; but it is not the underlying principle. The “win-at-all-costs” philosophy has no place in the SCTP. Striving to win while playing by the rules does. Honoring the game, exhibiting good sportsmanship, and being a responsible Team Member, these are the bedrock values the SCTP strives to instill. It is the DUTY of everyone involved in the SCTP – Coaches, Parents, and Athletes - to set good examples for SCTP Team Members to emulate by upholding high moral and ethical standards of personal conduct.

SCTP activities are designed to incorporate two indispensable elements – SAFETY AND FUN. Safety is incorporated into every facet of every SCTP activity. The learning environment at Team practices and at competitive shoots is designed to include the element of FUN for all participants. SCTP participants learn the safe and responsible handling and use of firearms. They discover the joy of contributing to a shared Team goal and the commitment that goes along with it. During this self-discovery process, Team Members develop proficiency in a sport that can be shared and enjoyed with family and friends for a lifetime.

Youth from the elementary grades through high school are eligible to participate in the safe, educational and enjoyable SCTP clay target sports of Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clays, ISSF Trap, and ISSF Skeet. It is ideally suited to be a school sponsored Title IX sport. There is no other sport that offers such an absolutely “level playing field” for gender integration as does the shooting sports. The SCTP is a perfect fit for youth organizations such as Boy Scouts, 4-H, F.F.A., P.A.L., Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs, et al. Any youth organization is welcome to participate in the SCTP.

National Archery in the Schools Program

The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) is a joint venture between State Departments of Education and Wildlife. Several archery equipment manufacturers and organizations are also partners. The program promotes student education, physical education and participation in the life long sport of archery.

Designed to teach International style target archery in physical education class 4th-12th grades, core content covers archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, core strengthening physical fitness and self-improvement. Before presenting the 2-week archery course, teachers undergo an 8-hour National Archery in the Schools Program® Basic Archery Instructor Training Program.

After School Archery Program

ASAP (After School Archery Program) was first conceived by the National Field Archery Association (NFAA) to serve as a next-step youth activity for all the youth in the USA who wanted more than just a first-peek at this fun sport. As the program was developed, other leading archery associations joined forces to create a complete activity that helps new archers gain confidence and experience in a wide variety of archery styles.

What does each partner bring to ASAP? NFAA is the leader in conducting community archery events, USA Archery is the official governing body for Olympic archery and has included into ASAP an introductory scoring game that teaches new archers about their Junior Olympic program. Archery Shooters Association (ASA) is a leader in conducting 3-D archery events all over the country and has included a scoring game that teaches how to shoot at a scoring target that isn't exactly round! National Alliance for the Development of Archery (NADA) is an association of certified archery instructors and coaches from all walks of life, and serves as the ASAP program facilitator. Archery Trade Association (ATA) represents the archery industry---its member manufacturers, proshops and distributors.

American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program

The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program is a gun safety education andmarksmanship program that encompasses the basic elements of safety, education, enjoyment and competition. Shooters use the .177 caliber air rifle. Both males and females can participate, through Legion sponsorship; disabled youth are encouraged to join, as competitive shooting is a sport that creates an equal playing field for all competitors.

Junior Shooting Sports is a three-part program that combines the Basic Marksmanship Course, Qualification Awards and Air Rifle Competition into a well-rounded activity.

The Basic Marksmanship Course, given to Shooting Sports participants, offers comprehensive instruction for beginning shooters with little or no marksmanship experience. Designed for an instructor’s easy use, the course teaches gun safety and marksmanship fundamentals, using short lectures or discussions, followed by hands-on activities.

Graduates who want to keep improving their skills can enroll in air-rifle qualification courses provided by the National Rifle Association and the Civilian Marksmanship Programs. These courses offer personal skill-development ladders for shooters to achieve established performance standards.

The annual 3-Position Junior Air Rifle National Championship is a tournament that begins with postal matches. State and/or regional champions are determined and advance to a qualification round (also a postal match) to determine the athletes who will earn expense-paid trips to compete in the national championship. The national championship is a shoulder-to-shoulder match held each August at the USA Shooting range facilities at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Fund Raising Sources

Since its inception, The NRA Foundation, Inc., has funded more than 15,000 grants totaling over $100 million, becoming America's leading charitable organization in support of the shooting sports.

State Fund Grants are awarded to eligible applicants for qualifying projects or activities that promote firearms and hunting safety and enhance the marksmanship skills of those participating in the shooting sports. State Fund Committees meet annually to review and recommend eligible projects for funding. Final approval rests with The NRA Foundation, Inc. Board of Trustees. Application submission deadlines and meeting dates are determined independently within each respective state.

Fund raising banquets are a great place to ask for help and show support for the local chapter.
