Description

We provide a service in the form of education. We teach the members which are from the age of 9 to 19. We teach gun safety, responsibility and discipline. Avoyelles Parish is a very strong hunting parish. Our parish is surrounded by wildlife reserves. If we can teach these members the aspects ofproper gun control and safety, I feel that we are saving a life. We have no shooting rangewithin a 25 mile radius, so the members are shooting on private land with the owner's permission. Ourcertified rifle instructor is hoping toreceive air rifles and accessories due to the fact that whenit rains, they have no where topractice.Themembers must attend 8 hours of practice with a certified instructor in order to attend district competition. As the coordinator and archery instructor, I love this program because of the positive change in makes in these kids.We teach them to also compete against themselvesand not with others. We strive tobetter their own score and not pay attention to the person next to them. I seekids come out of their shell by developing self confidence and being able to interact better withtheir peers. We also offer shotgun, archery, rifle and hunting skills for the parish 4-H members. All of our instructors are certified by the LSU Agcenter. We have a very good parent volunteer program. Our 4-H agents are very supportive and play a major role in the program. Our kids are from a parish that has no industry to support our tax basis. We are a strong farming community. Any help that we are given is greatly appreciated by our parents and members.
